Rainy days and dry stalls
Rain, snow, rain. Snow, rain, snow. This is winter in Kentucky. It has been wet and gray for what seems like days and days. I am looking forward to a nice nap in the sun, I hope I don’t have to wait until spring!
The biggest problem with rain and snow is that it makes me wet and I don’t particularly like being wet. If it is wet and windy then I get cold. You know, I am a hot-blooded Thoroughbred and I just don’t get that thick fuzzy winter coat the other fellows grow. Mine is far more “refined,” shall we say (but not as waterproof). Now Ginger, geez, she already has 6 inches of hair! She is like Nanook of the North. Nothing can penetrate her coat.
Of course, being an older and wiser gentleman, as soon as the wet stuff starts falling out of the sky, I head for a dry stall. Sometimes I get adventurous and stand under the patio overhang and just let my head get wet, but just my head. The Short One says I am weird, but I like it.
The other day it was bucketing down cold rain, and it had been all morning. Ginger was in her stall and I was hanging out in Oreo’s stall right next to her. Oreo and I often switch stalls when we are turned out in the morning. He likes to clean up all the hay I am not interested in eating and I like to stand next to Ginger, so it works out. Sorry, back to my story. It was so wet and cold that I was very happy to be in a stall. Well those fools Oreo and Mocha, do you know what they were doing? They were just standing out in the rain, getting sopping wet! Just standing there. I couldn’t believe it. No horse with any kind of good sense purposely stands out in the cold rain when there is a perfectly good stall to go in.
Kids today, I just don’t know…
