Treating Laminitis – Did you Know?

When treating laminitis, cooling the hoof wall to between 40 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit for 48 to 72 hours can help prevent inflammation from damaging the soft laminae.

Be prepared to make a commitment, though, as evidence suggests intermittent cooling might be worse than not cooling at all.

When cooling the hooves, wet methods work best (ice and water). To keep the hoof cold, cool the hoof and the limb above it to ensure incoming blood is sufficiently chilled. Typically ice and water have to be replenished every 2 hours.

If you suspect your horse is foundering, be sure to contact your veterinarian immediately!
