Product Description

More like nature intended.

In a natural state, a horse grazes constantly, chewing for many hours a day and producing gallons of acid-buffering saliva that keeps their stomach healthy. The modern horse often has limited access to pasture and hay; they are fed large grain meals and often lead busy, stressful lives. This can result in less chewing time and reduced saliva production, both of which that leave the horse prone to gastric health issues.

Why choose Neigh-Lox?

Neigh-Lox’s unique patented formula aids in the maintenance of a normal stomach environment by supporting normal gastric acid levels and a healthy mucosal lining.

Long-acting Neigh-Lox maintains a normal stomach environment for up to 8 hours.

Research shows gastric health issues are found among all horses.

It has been documented that 93% of horses in race training,  nearly 60% of other performance horses, and  57% of all foals face gastric health issues. Recreational horses and broodmares are also at risk.

A research project  conducted on a band of broodmares at the University of California, Davis revealed that even though the mares had not been exposed to the conditions conducive to gastric health issues,  the occurrence of gastric acid imbalances in the mares was approximately 70%. Research done on recreational horses showed that imbalances were noted within  a couple of days when horses are stressed due to travel or other seemingly minor changes in their routine.

Support a normal stomach environment with Neigh-Lox.

  • Neigh-Lox has the capacity to support a normal environment  for a long period of time (minimum 6-8 hours); most digestive supplements do so for a much shorter period.
  • Neigh-Lox maintains a healthy stomach by supporting normal gastric acid levels and a healthy mucosal lining.

FAQ

  • What is the difference between Neigh-Lox original and Neigh-Lox Advanced?

  • The original Neigh-Lox®, with the blue label, was developed in 1996 to support a healthy gastric environment.  Neigh-Lox’s proprietary formula maintains normal stomach pH and healthy mucosal tissues. Four ounces (2 scoops) of Neigh-Lox helps maintain normal stomach environment for 6 to 8 hours. Neigh-Lox can be offered two to three times daily or it can be  used as needed during times of stress to maintain a healthy stomach. Neigh-Lox is an excellent follow-up to a course of omeprazole to support continuing recovery.

Neigh-Lox® Advanced, with the pink label, was formulated  to supporting both a healthy stomach and  hindgut.  Neigh-Lox Advanced contains ingredients that not only support a normal stomach environment like original Neigh-Lox, but also maintain a well-balanced hindgut.  Neigh-Lox Advanced contains yeast fermentation metabolites that support a robust and healthy microbiome. The inclusion of Saccharomyces boulardii in Neigh-Lox Advanced supports normal digestion of starches and sugars in the foregut, before they can escape into the hindgut and cause problems. Additionally, S. boulardii supplies nutrients to the gastrointestinal tissues that support the growth of healthy tissue. Daily supplementation of four ounces (2 scoops), two to three times per day of Neigh-Lox Advanced is recommended. Continual support is the key to recovery and maintenance of a healthy digestive tract.

  • What causes gastric ulcers?

  • Horses produce gastric acid all the time, not just in response to a meal. Gastric ulcers are caused by excessive acid accumulation in the stomach. In their natural state, horses spend up to 18 hours a day grazing. While they graze, they produce saliva that naturally buffers the acids found in the stomach. Excess acid irritates the non-glandular stomach lining that causes discomfort and can lead to lesions. This problem is common in modern horses that can’t graze continually. Horses on diets loaded with starchy concentrates (grains) are at additional risk. Increased stress levels play a significant role in the development of ulcers.

  • What is Neigh-Lox and how does it work?

  • Neigh-Lox contains ingredients that support  a normal gastric environment in much the same way the horse’s saliva does when they are able to graze all day long.

  • I want to support a healthy digestive tract in my show horses during the competitive season. When should I begin adding Neigh-Lox to their diet?

  • We recommend starting horses on Neigh-Lox at least two weeks prior to the first show of the season. Continue offering Neigh-Lox throughout the season and for two weeks following the end of the season.

Including Neigh-Lox at the rate of 4 oz per grain meal will support a healthy stomach environment.

  • I have a couple of horses going into training. Do you recommend I start them on Neigh-Lox?

  • Yes, Neigh-Lox is a very appropriate supplement for horses in training. For the best results, start your horses on Neigh-Lox at the rate of 4 oz per grain meal at least two weeks prior to their first day of training and continue it for the duration of the training period.

  • I am relocating my mare and my vet told me to put her on Neigh-Lox during the move. She gets fed twice a day. What do you suggest?

  • Include Neigh-Lox at the rate of 4 oz per meal two weeks prior to shipping, with continued administration throughout the trip and for at least two weeks (or longer, if your horse is having trouble settling in) after arriving at your new stable. This will help maintain a normal stomach environment.

  • My vet scoped my gelding and found ulcers. She told me to start my horse on Neigh-Lox when he is done with the omeprazole treatments she prescribed. How is Neigh-Lox different from omeprazole?

  • Omeprazole is a drug classified as a proton pump inhibitor, while Neigh-Lox is a digestive supplement. These two types of products serve two distinct purposes. Proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole heal lesions in the stomach by “turning off” gastric acid production. Though treatment is expensive, this is often the first step taken to cure severe ulcers already present in the stomach.

Once an appropriate course of a proton pump inhibitor is concluded, a supplement, such as Neigh-Lox, is given. Neigh-Lox can be administered as long as is needed to maintain a normal stomach environment.

Scientifically formulated, Neigh-Lox is appropriate for horses of all ages, from foals and weanlings to mature performance horses.

  • When it is time to wean my foals, will Neigh-Lox help maintain a healthy stomach during this stressful time?

  • Yes, using Neigh-Lox will help your foal maintain a healthy stomach during weaning. We recommend you being to slowly incorporate Neigh-Lox into your foal’s diet at least 3 weeks prior to weaning. The goal is to be administering 2 oz of Neigh-Lox per grain meal before weaning begins. Continue to administer Neigh-Lox daily for at least two months post weaning, or as long as necessary depending on your management situation. Do not administer more than 8 oz per day until weanlings reach one year of age. Yearlings and adult horses can be fed up to 16 oz per day as needed.

  • How can Neigh-Lox help horses in training?

  • Neigh-Lox supports a normal stomach environment. When a horse feels healthy, it eats better, trains better, races better, and shows better.

  • Can Neigh-Lox be given to any horse?

  • Yes. Horses of all ages, from foals to seniors, can be offered Neigh-Lox. Neigh-Lox is also safe for pregnant and nursing mares. For foals under 6 months of age, consult your veterinarian on administration rate.

  • I read recently that Neigh-Lox stops cribbing. I have a cribber, so I am interested in knowing if this is true.

  • In a study conducted by the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom, scientists evaluated the effectiveness of Neigh-Lox on decreasing the incidence of cribbing in foals. The trial concluded that crib-biting foals that had received Neigh-Lox showed a decrease in cribbing behavior.

There is some anecdotal evidence that Neigh-Lox may reduce cribbing in an older horse if the cribbing is in response to stomach discomfort, but there is not yet any statistical research to back up this claim. Cribbing is considered to be a behavioral habit in older horses.

  • The consigner who sold my two-year-old puts all her sales horses on Neigh-Lox. Why?

  • Consigners want their horses to look and feel great prior to and during the sale. Maintaining a healthy stomach with Neigh-Lox will help a horse perform at his best. Including Neigh-Lox at the rate of 4 oz per grain meal will support a healthy stomach environment.

  • How do I know if my horse has ulcers?

  • Horses with ulcers may develop the following symptoms: decrease in quality of performance, poor appetite, mild to severe bouts of colic, poor coat quality, and/or sour attitude or change in attitude. Some horses will show no symptoms at all. The best way to diagnose and assess the severity of an ulcer is to have your veterinarian scope your horse. Your vet can then suggest the best treatment and management regimen for your horse.

  • I have heard that too much aluminum is bad for horses. My horse has been on Neigh-Lox for several years and it really helps him. Should I be concerned since Neigh-Lox contains some aluminum?

  • No, you do not need to be concerned about the levels of aluminum found in Neigh-Lox. Studies have shown that a daily intake of 1,500 ppm of aluminum, an active ingredient in Neigh-Lox, causes no adverse side effects in horses. The maximum recommended daily dose of Neigh-Lox contains only 930 ppm of aluminum.

When to use Neigh-Lox

Horses maintained under certain management conditions are at an increased risk for developing an unbalanced stomach environment. Horses that are unable to graze continually due to busy training and competition schedules, those on restricted diets or those consuming high starch diets, and horses that are confined for any reason also risk developing imbalances. In these cases, supplementation with Neigh-Lox helps support a well balanced,  normal stomach environment.

Research shows that even seemingly minor changes in a horse’s routine, such as relocation from one pasture to another or a weekend outing, can set a horse up for gastric health issues. Supplementing with Neigh-Lox during times of change or stress helps maintain a healthy  stomach.

Neigh-Lox is recommended for:

  • Horses and ponies of all ages (from foals to seniors) experiencing changes in their routines or other stressful conditions
  • Horses and ponies prone to gastric health issues
  • Horses and ponies that are completing a course of omeprazole
  • Horses and ponies confined to a stall or dry lot where grazing is limited
  • Horses and ponies with busy training or competition schedules
  • Horses and ponies being transported or relocated
  • Horses and ponies on restricted diets or those consuming large amounts of starchy concentrate
